Additional Notes Composite from late 1850s. Door handles are stamped GWR Swindon but may have originated with one of its constituent companies - possibly Severn and Wye or Monmouth Railway or South Devon or Cornwall Railway. Also, some of the detailing suggests a product of Joseph Wright and Sons. 20 ft long by 7 ft 8 ins wide. The sides are 6 ft 1 in to the cant rails and the external apex is 6 ft 8 in. Three compartments: 2 3rd class with narrow, round-topped quarterlights (with brass beading on the outside) and one 1st central saloon. It has one wooden bench remaining in a 3rd compartment. Doors hinged on right. The 3rd class doors are 21 in wide and the 1st is 2 ft wide. The 3rd quarterlights are 1 ft wide over outside frame and 23 in high over frame. Writing discovered on the interior bodywork indicates it was located in Winterbourne Dauntsey, Wiltshire by 1889. Owned by same family for the past 100 years - at one stage adapted to be towed behind a steam traction engine as travelling accommodation and later grounded in a makeshift store in the present location - now visible from the path leading from Moorlands Road to Stephen's Castle Nature Reserve in Verwood, Dorset. Any further information on the ownership or history of this vehicle would be welcome. 06/21: for sale by auction through Charterhouse Auctioneers. 07/22: confirmed still in situ.
